VISUAL IDENTITY ANKE+MENNO /// STAMP /// 2010 /// A quick snapshot I just received of the first hand stamped business cards we made for musicians Anke+Menno. In collaboration with Simone Trum.

WAAR BEN JIJ NU? (WHERE ARE YOU NOW?) /// ZINE /// 2010 /// A reconstruction of my trip to Marocco through Google. On the left pages my own photo's made on my trip, on the right pages images I found on Google. I reconstructed my diary text by different fragments from blogs, travel diaries and other websites. With the rise of internet, a (travel) experience is not unique and personal anymore: it's from everybody.

IK WIL LATER NOOIT NAAR HET BOEKENBAL (WHEN I'M GROWN UP I WILL NEVER GO TO THE BOEKENBAL) /// INTERIOR PROPOSAL BOEKENBAL /// 2009 /// The theme of the Boekenbal (event for dutch writers) this year is 'growing up in literature', based on the book 'Titaantjes' from Nescio. This book is about a couple of youngsters who want to follow their dreams and react against society, but later on they have no choice but to give in to expectations of society. We searched for texts in the dutch literature in the same context; the idealism and rebellion of the youth (Harry Mulish, Jan Wolkers, Jan Cremer, Nescio). We used the language of protest to give form to these texts and used different handwritings (using paint, marker, tape, papercuttings) to express the individual voices. In collaboration with Simone Trum.

URBINO URBINO /// WERKPLAATS TYPOGRAFIE - ISIA SUMMERSCHOOL 2009 /// What could be an alternative (visual) identity of the city of Urbino? The famous painter Raphael was born in Urbino, and so all the shops in this town use his selfportrait and copies of his paintings in order to sell more ice cream/jewellery/vegetables/clothes. In this way the meaning of these images change and become empty. In fact; the images of Raphael become a logo for the city. We reproduced images of Raphael-paintings inside shopwindows (again) on postcards. On the backside of the cards is written the title and place of the painting, with in its shadow the place where the real painting is shown (as if Urbino were an alternative museum). In collaboration with Simone Trum.

FOCUS! /// TUTTOBENE PUBLICATION - SALONE DEL MOBILE DI MILANO 2008 /// Tuttobene is a platform that organizes exhibitions for young product designers during the Salone Internazionale in Milan every year. We came up with the editorial concept 'Focus!' for the Tuttobene publication 2008. We wanted to give all the participants their own attention, but also bring them together as a group. We chose one colour and four words per participant to desribe their vision and style. By connecting the words throughout the paper, the participants get connected to eachother. The newspaper is designed as a bunch of folded posters, so unexpected combinations arise. In collaboration with Esmee Steur.

TEXTING TEXTING /// RESEARCH PROJECT /// 2008 /// I'm interested in the way text and communication changes under the influence of new media. In this book I translated nine short stories into a typographical experiment, using several elements from new media (tagging, blogging, e-mail, etc.) based on the content of the story. I wanted to break with the linearity of text. I build up the book out of typographical elements and punctuation.

HET ZELFMANIFEST /// THESIS /// 2008 /// I'm fascinated by the way people place images of themselves in the media, and the over-exposure as a result. It seems like nowadays there's a 'confessculture': people want to show eveything of themselves, otherwise they don't exist. I designed my thesis in two ways: the text is designed as a novel, intimate and modest. Every chapter is about one person (an artist, a designer, etc.) and the confessions they make are designed as posters. These posters can be torn out so the quotes can be made public.

START /// VORMBERICHTEN /// MAGAZINE COVER IMAGE /// 2008 /// Made and photographed at Dietwee. I built up the word 'start' from a toy race track on the studio floor. The kit had just enough pieces to spell out the word, and two of my collegues were willing to play the track. It was a fun friday afternoon!

REDEFINING MUSICAL IDENTITIES /// DESIGN PROPOSAL /// 2007 /// Design for a collection of essays about the future of musical identities. The essays are classified in three parts. We made a seperate book of every part, each with it's own cover and lay out: it's own identity. This resulted in 'a clash of identities' so the structure visualizes the subject of the book. In collaboration with Annelou van Griensven.

ARTEZ STUDYGUIDE /// DESIGN PROPOSAL /// 2007 /// Proposal for the ArtEZ schoolguide 2007/2008. Because the guide is meant for the three different art schools (Enschede, Zwolle and Arnhem) of ArtEZ, we placed the texts in three columns next to eachother in their own colour. Blue is generic text. In this way you can easily compare the information, because the chapters all start at the same position. For example: if Arnhem doesn't have the chapter 'illustration' there's a white space. By folding the pages, the guide turns into an agenda. In collaboration with Anne Schaufeli.

WAKERS /// TAZ /// 2006 /// This project is based on the book 'Temporary Autonomous Zone' by Hakim Bey. I created my own TAZ with the upheaval of the 24-hours economy in the back of my head. Everything is possible, 24 hours of the day. In my TAZ people perform their daily activities during the night. In this way they annex the public space at night where they find peace and quietness instead of busy traffic and people shopping. The function of the streets and other public spaces I photographed become totally different during the night.
